The barrel-aged Furmint of the Gróf Degenfeld Winery has been selected a Piarist wine

03. July 2009.

The Gróf Degenfeld Winery has had the honour of having their wine selected out of the Tokaj wines at the first Piarist wine selection process.

Piarists have been teaching for centuries and established many schools in Hungary since 1642. They still educate thousands of young people in their primary schools, high schools and vocational schools. They have also had a significant role in developing Hungarian wine culture as well and their vineyards grew into role models over the centuries.
The order had a number of large vineyards in their possession by which Hungarian as well as internationally awarded wines were produced, such as Dörgicse in the higher lands of Balaton and Mád and Sátoraljaújhely near Tokaj.
The lack of wine production due to the Communist regime `s confiscation of vineyards following World War II resulted in the loss of social, cultural and gastronomic values.
The aim of the Piarist wine competition called for the first time this year is to revive the old traditions and familiarise the wine connoisseur audience with the wines of the rising and hard-working Hungarian producers.
The judges made up of experts and representatives of the Piarist order included András Guba, the director of the order, dr. Tamás Freund brain scientist, professor dr. Miklós Kállay the head of Viniculture Department of Corvinus University, and was headed by, dr. Ferenc Oberfrank President of the Piarist Student Body and Otto Szöghy, sommelier.
At the selection held on the 24th of March, wines were ranked according to taste, bouquet, colour and scent within a 20 point system. The wines were blind-tasted and the members of the jury could only find out the names of the producers after they had made their decisions.
The jury assessed the wines of the Tokaj-Hegyalja region and Balaton separately. From Tokaj it was the Gróf Degenfeld Winery`s Tokaj Furmint barrel-aged 2007 that was awarded the title of „Piarist wine” and Nyári Ödön Szentgyörgy-hill Szürkebarát 2008 of the Balaton region.
This year it was these two wines that represented the vinicultural traditions and values of the Piarist Order.
The wines can be purchased on www.piarista.hu.

„Gyalázod a bort, hogy nem ád eszet?
Mi hathatósabb a bornál ugyan?
Nem látod: az ember, hogyha jót iszik,
Mily dús, pörét megnyerte, végrehajt
Mindent, barátját fölsegéli; boldog.
Hozz hát nekem egy kancsóval: az eszem
Hadd áztatom meg s mondok egy okost.”
